Science at John Perryn

Intent

At John Perryn Primary School, our vision is to equip children with a science curriculum, which enables them to explore and discover the world around them, confidently. Consequently, they will have a deeper understanding of the world we live in.

We realise that children are naturally curious and passionate about learning: we provide a stimulating science curriculum, that is designed around the National Science Curriculum and the knowledge rich Primary Knowledge (PKC) science curriculum. We are combining both the disciplines of scientific investigation and knowledge, in order to nurture children’s natural curiosity and their on-going intellectual development.

Implementation

Our science curriculum has developed substantially over several years, through hands-on, inquiry-based investigations, where children experience the joy of having wonderful ideas, exploration and investigation – that is, the joy of finding out.  Our aim is that these stimulating and challenging experiences, combined with substantive scientific knowledge of physics, biology and chemistry, help children secure and extend their scientific knowledge and vocabulary. Our curriculum enables children to understand the important role that science plays in the sustainability of life on earth.

Importantly, our science curriculum builds knowledge incrementally. Pupils have multiple opportunities to secure and build on their knowledge and understanding as subject content is revisited at points throughout the curriculum.

Consequently, we believe that these opportunities will ensure that our children are equipped to go forth into their secondary education by becoming confident, life-long learners, who will be keen to explore the world around them.
