Physical Education at John Perryn

Intent

At John Perryn Primary School we believe that all children should have access to a high quality physical education (PE) curriculum and that PE and school sport should be an integral part of the whole school curriculum. Our school recognises the benefits that high quality PE provision and school sport can give to all pupils. Through a range of sports, we aim to help develop a love of PE within our school. The children will take part in a range of different sports such as swimming, gymnastics, netball, sitting volleyball, cricket, tennis and many more. While taking part in these different sports, the children will learn about a diverse range of role models to show that everyone is equal and, no matter your ability or background, you can always take part.

At John Perryn we encourage children to live healthy lives and to look after their bodies and minds. A study has shown that regular participation in physical activity and higher levels of physical fitness have been linked to improved academic performance and brain functions such as attention and memory as well as young people's overall social and mental well-being. These brain functions are the foundation for learning. We encourage children to try new sports and inspire them to take on these activities outside of school. Children are also encouraged to value the benefit of social interaction through sport and develop leadership skills through a series of inter-house competitions; playing friendly matches in an increasing variety of sports against local schools; taking part in large regional competitions organised by our sports partners and participate in after-school clubs with the focus on enjoyment and social interaction.

Implementation

We follow the Jasmine (Real PE) scheme, which is matched with the National Curriculum to ensure coverage. These lesson work on a fortnightly basis; the first week is spent explicitly teaching the new skill and the following week the children implement it in a sport. All teachers have received training on how to deliver the Real PE programme.

At the end of each lesson the children will be assessed using a summative assessment, where they reflect upon what they have learnt and how the lesson can be differentiated to make it easier or harder depending on the development of the lesson. During the term, the PE subject leader will talk regularly with teachers and review how the lessons are going and if anything needs to be changed or adapted. The school will also be working towards the Featherstone SSP Awards for participation in a range of different sporting activities. As well as this, we will be working towards achieving the silver award having achieved Healthy Schools Bronze Award London this year.
