Art at John Perryn
Intent
At John Perryn Primary School we recognise the importance of art education in personal development. We believe that art stimulates creativity, imagination and inventiveness. We aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills they need to appreciate art in its many forms, as well as learning a variety of techniques to create their own. We follow the Primary Knowledge Curriculum, from the Knowledge Schools Trust.
‘This art curriculum is a knowledge rich curriculum. Knowledge, in the realm of art means knowledge not only of artists, designers, architects and their work, but of the artistic concepts that relate to their work shown in different types and styles of art, how these relate to each other in a historical context and how this affects the children’s own use of materials and development of skills’.
Key Coverage
Children will:
* produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
* become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
* evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
* know about a diverse range of great artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Implementation
At John Perryn, our youngest children are given access to mark making resources; they explore colour and line and learn how either can be changed. Children are encouraged to express feelings through their art and capture experiences and responses with a wide range of media. They begin to create simple representations of events, people and objects, choosing particular colours and textures for different purposes.
This is further developed in KS1 and KS2, where children explore a wide range of art techniques, study the work of famous artists and record their observations to review and revisit ideas. By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the knowledge, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.
The overall scheme of the art curriculum provides for gradual progression in terms of skills and knowledge of different concepts and types of art. Activities children are directed to undertake during lessons are designed with an eye to the importance of learning and practicing process. These activities include written and verbal observations, observational, analytical and imaginative drawing activities in ks1 leading to the process of independent investigation, planning, design and annotation by the end of ks2.
We value our children’s achievements and celebrate art with whole school events and an annual art gallery where parents and carers, as well as children, are invited to share the wonderful artwork created. We promote art as we believe that creativity stimulates pupils to express and communicate their ideas through this unique language.
